Ralph Rinzler of the Smithsonian Institution provides a warm introduction to a video of the great guitar player, Doc Watson. In this intro, he captures what is at the heart of “Society’s Genome.”

What we’re doing here this morning will be saved if we can keep our world running in good balance, as long as that world is running—and those tapes will be there as long as the technology permits it.

And—the Doc Watson part is pretty good as well. Here’s to all who practice the seven tenets of good archiving and genetic diversity.

As stated in “Society’s Genome” on page 13, “Our stewardship of data and information determines our future.”  That future includes the melodies of music from the past.
